It was cup action for the Stewkley First team on Saturday afternoon as Budgen & Howard's side travelled to Olney Town for a second round tie in the North Bucks Interdivisional Trophy.
Olney ply their trade in the league below but currently sit top of the league having won 13 of their 15 league games so it looked set to be a great contest between two in form sides. It was a slightly changed squad with usual stopper Essex unavailable, young Stewkley u18 stopper, Noah Hadley made his senior football debut. Carter and Bailey have also headed out to Australia (the jokers) so are out of action for a few weeks.
The contest started in really quick fashion and it was the hosts Olney who found themselves in on goal after 30 seconds, Iannelli got stuck in the mud and the Olney striker was away bearing down on Hadley's goal, however the striker rushed his shot and the Stewkley stopper gratefully scooped up the shot. Straight from that Stewkley worked the ball forward and Hardings looked to set Waldram away despite the Olney defender getting to the ball his touch played the ball into the path of Waldram who made no mistake from 12 yards out slotting the ball into the far right hand corner. Olney 0-1 Stewkley.
It wasn't long before Stewkley doubled their lead, this time Scrivener and McKenna combined down the left before finding Hardings on the edge of the box who turned inside and found the onrushing Kirchin who took a touch and slammed his shot into the top right hand corner. Olney 0-2 Stewkley.
After the quick start the game began to settle into some sort of rhythm and it was Stewkley dominating possession and Olney trying to find a way into proceedings. An Olney midfielder found his way into the book after leaving plenty on Scrivener after the ball had gone and not long after Stewkley then made it three. This time Roadnight and Kirchin worked the ball down the right and Kirchin found some space to knock the ball into the area and find the unmarked McKenna who from 6 yards out couldn't miss. Olney 0-3 Stewkley.
After the third Olney were getting frustrated and were struggling to find a way back into the game, their problems doubled in size when the midfielder who had already been booked left the floor and jumped into a tackle out of control, leaving the referee no option but to show him a second yellow and give him his marching orders.
After that there was little action of note and Stewkley went in at half-time the goals to the good.
At half-time Scrivener was replaced by Wells who too was making his first team debut. Straight from kick off it should have been four for Stewkley as Waldram was set through by Budgen and burst into the box but fired his shot straight at the keeper. Olney came out in the second half with a bit mroe structure to their play and they grabbed themselves a goal when they broke down the right and whipped in a great ball with their striker connected with and left Hadley in the Stewkley goal with no chance. Olney 1-3 Stewkley.
Stewkley responded quickly to Olney's goal when again Budgen found some space in the middle of the park and he slipped Kirchin through on goal, who calmly stroked the ball beyond the Olney stopper and into the back of the net. Olney 1-4 Stewkley.
The visitors were again completely in control after the fourth and they continued to probe the hosts goal before finally grabbing a fifth when Kirchin was involved again and he beat two players down the right before cutting the ball back to birthday boy Faulkner who stroked the ball home on his weaker right foot to completely put the game to bed.
Full-Time: Olney 1- 5 Stewkley
Scorers: Waldram, Kirchin x2, McKenna & Faulkner
